Breed Introduction
The Manchester Terrier inherits the bloodline of the now-extinct Black and Tan Terrier. In the 18th century, a breeder named John Hulme developed the Manchester Terrier in Manchester by crossing it with Whippets to produce the Manchester breed, which later incorporated blood from the West Highland Terrier, forming the current variety.
The Manchester Terrier hunts visually and was bred for two purposes: rabbit hunting and rat catching. This dog is very courageous and agile, having retained its lively, alert, and quick nature after long-term breeding, while improving its originally rough and impatient temperament.
It is an excellent rat catcher, and in the late 19th century, a dog named Bailey famously killed 100 rats in just over six minutes during a popular rat-catching competition.
